How do I convert a JPG to PNG?
Add the JPG above and click “Convert to PNG”. The picture is re-saved in your browser as a PNG and you download it. Your original JPG stays as it was, so you can keep whichever version suits you.
Be realistic about the reason. This is not an upgrade in sharpness. It is a change in container, useful because PNG will not lose more detail each time you edit and save, and because many programs expect PNG for designs and icons.
Tip: Make all your edits first and convert to PNG last, or convert first and edit from the PNG. Either way, avoid going back and forth between the two formats.
Does JPG to PNG make a picture sharper or remove the background?
No to both, and it is worth knowing so you are not disappointed. JPG compression happened when the picture was first saved, and that loss is permanent. A PNG made from it faithfully preserves what is left, including any faint blockiness.
Likewise, converting does not cut out a background. A JPG has a solid one, and the PNG keeps it. If you want a transparent cut-out, you need an editor to remove the background first, then save as PNG.
When is a PNG the better choice?
- Repeated editing. Retouching, annotating or cropping several times without further degradation.
- Design layers. Slides, posters and mockups where pictures are stacked.
- Text and lines. Screenshots, diagrams and scans of printed pages.
- Specific requirements. A program, store or form that asks for PNG.
For ordinary photographs destined for email or a form, JPG is smaller and the better pick. Size is the main price of PNG, so use it only when its strengths matter.
Is it safe to convert JPG to PNG online?
Yes. The page loads online, but the conversion runs inside your browser. The JPG is read, saved as PNG and returned on your device, and nothing about the file, its name or its size is sent to a server.
After the first visit the tool keeps working without a connection. To see for yourself, open the network tab in your browser while you convert and notice that no file goes out.
