How do I convert an image from one format to another?
Add the picture above, pick the output format and click the convert button. The conversion happens right away in your browser and you download the new file. The original stays unchanged, so nothing is lost if you decide a different format works better.
If you already know the pair you need, the dedicated pages for WebP to JPG, PNG to JPG, JPG to PNG and the others do the same job with the choices pre-set. This page is for when you want to pick freely.
Tip: When a site rejects your file, check the formats it names. Many older upload forms accept only JPG, and converting is usually all it takes.
Which image format is best for what?
- JPG. Photographs, ID photos and anything you will email or upload to a form. Small, universal, no transparency.
- PNG. Screenshots, logos, charts and graphics with sharp edges or see-through areas. Larger for photos.
- WebP. Web images where speed matters. Often lighter than both, but a few older programs and forms still do not open it.
Match the format to the destination rather than the other way around. If a hiring portal wants JPG, a WebP will bounce no matter how good it looks.
What happens to quality, size and transparency when I convert?
Quality loss comes from the lossy formats, JPG and WebP, which save space by discarding detail the eye barely sees. Do it once and the loss is usually invisible. Converting a file back and forth many times builds up damage, so keep your best original.
File size shifts with the format. A photo as JPG or WebP is normally far smaller than the same photo as PNG. A flat logo can go the other way and be tiny as PNG. If you need a particular limit after converting, use Compress image.
Transparency survives in PNG and WebP, but JPG fills it with a solid color. If you need the see-through background, avoid JPG.
Is it safe to convert an image online?
Yes. The page is online, but the converting is done by your browser on your own phone or computer. The picture is read, re-encoded and handed back, and neither the file nor its name or size is sent to a server.
Once you have used it, the tool keeps working without a connection. To see the privacy for yourself, open the network tab in your browser, convert a picture and watch that nothing is uploaded.
