How do I convert a PDF to Excel?
Drop the PDF into the box above and click “Convert to Excel”. The tool reads each page, looks for rows and columns, and writes what it finds into an XLSX workbook. You download the file and open it in Excel, Google Sheets or any spreadsheet app. Your original PDF is not changed.
The conversion works from the text and lines that are actually inside the PDF. That is why a digital PDF, one exported from accounting software, a website or a report, converts far better than a photo of a page. The tool does not guess at pictures.
Tip: If the result looks off, try one table at a time. Use the Extract pages tool to pull out just the page you need, then convert that single page.
Why do some PDF tables convert better than others?
Think about how you read a table. Clear lines tell your eye where each cell is. The tool uses the same clue, so these cases behave like this:
- Bordered tables (good). Grid lines mark the cells, so rows and columns are detected reliably.
- Borderless tables (fair). Columns are inferred from the spacing between words. It often works when the columns are clearly separated, and can misplace a cell when text is cramped.
- Merged or multi-line cells (fair to weak). A heading that spans several columns, or a cell that wraps over three lines, may be split or shifted.
- Tables across pages. Each page is converted on its own, so you may need to join the pieces.
- Scans and photos (not supported directly). Run OCR first.
We call this a Beta so you know what to expect. A tidy invoice or price list should come out almost ready to use. A dense annual report may need a few minutes of cleanup.
What should I check after converting?
Spreadsheets reward a quick check, because one shifted column can change a total. A routine that takes a minute:
- Compare the row count and the last total against the PDF.
- Look at the columns holding dates and amounts. Make sure each value sits in the right column.
- Check for numbers stored as text, which can be fixed with your spreadsheet’s convert-to-number option.
- Delete empty rows and columns that came from page margins or decoration.
Remember that a PDF stores how a table looks, not how it was calculated. You will get values, not formulas, so rebuild any totals you need. If you mostly want the words rather than the grid, PDF to Text or PDF to Word may suit you better.
Is it safe to convert a PDF to Excel online?
Yes. You open the tool online, but the conversion runs on your own phone or computer. The browser reads the PDF, detects the tables and builds the workbook, and at no point is the file sent to a server. Financial statements, payroll lists and customer data deserve exactly that.
You can check it yourself by opening your browser’s network tab during a conversion: no file data leaves your device. After the first use the tool also works offline. There is nothing to install, no account and no limit on how often you use it.
