How do I edit a PDF for free?
Drop your PDF into the box above and wait a moment while the pages appear. Pick a tool from the toolbar, click the spot on the page where the change belongs, and make it. Text, drawings, highlights and images each have their own tool, and you can switch between them as often as you like. When you are happy, save, and you download a new PDF while your original file stays as it was.
Because everything is placed on top of the existing page, the layout, fonts and images of the original are left alone. That is the main reason to edit the PDF directly instead of converting it to another format: nothing reflows and nothing shifts out of place.
Tip: Zoom in before you place small text. It is much easier to line a date up with a printed line when you can see the line clearly.
How do I edit text in a PDF?
There are two situations. If you want to add words, use the text tool and click an empty spot. If you want to change words that are already there, select them and type the replacement. Short fixes such as a wrong date, a misspelled name or a new phone number work well.
Be realistic about longer edits. A PDF stores each line as positioned text, not as a flowing paragraph, so adding a sentence in the middle will not push the rest of the paragraph down. For a full rewrite, convert the file to Word with the PDF to Word tool, edit it there, and export again. For a scanned document that is only a picture, run OCR first so the text becomes real text.
Which edit tool should I use for my task?
This page is the general editor, and a few jobs have a dedicated page that is quicker.
- Signing a document: use Sign, which keeps your signature as a reusable image.
- A form with boxes to tick and fields to fill: use Fill forms.
- A logo, photo or stamp: use Add image.
- A repeated “DRAFT” or “CONFIDENTIAL” on every page: use Watermark.
- Hiding a number or a name for good: use Redact. A black box drawn here only covers the text, it does not remove it.
Everything else, such as notes, corrections, highlights and quick drawings, is what this editor is for.
Is it safe to edit a PDF online?
Yes, because the file is not uploaded. You open the page online, but your browser does the editing on your own phone or computer. The PDF, the words you type and the images you place never travel to a server, so there is nothing to intercept and nothing stored on our side.
You can check this yourself: open your browser’s network tab, edit a file and watch. The only requests are for the page itself. That makes it a reasonable place to correct a contract, add a note to a payslip or mark up a draft that you do not want to hand to a third party.
